Mr. Read graduated from Antioch College, and after spending two years with the US Army in Germany, began teaching full time in Novato, California. He had experience teaching in all grades, although his primary assignment was that of a science teacher and department chairman at Sinaloa Junior High.

After 17 years of full time teaching, he and his family moved to Massachusetts when his father called for help in managing the small family business. Returning to California and the educational profession in 1996, he began substitute teaching for the Vista Unified School District.

As a Full Time Teacher

His teaching responsibilities included Physical Science, Family life, Elective Guitar classes,  a science program for the gifted, and an after school aeronautics club. He was also a teacher/director for a Summer School Conservation class that was a multi grade level program for students in the 4th through 11th grades. He wrote the syllabus for the program for the State of California so other districts could create similar programs. Mr. Read also took many post graduate classes at UC Berkeley, Sonoma State and Dominican College.

As an Entertainer

Mr. Read, aka Ruff Read, learned  to play the acoustical guitar and sing folk, country, and pop songs while in college. Summertime jobs as a counselor or program director at children's camps in New England, Ohio, and California gave him many opportunities to share music around campfires with campers and staff.  During his Army tour of duty in Germany, he entertained the troops as a performer for the USO.  In the San Francisco Bay Area, he performed for both public and private functions. Some venues included  KGO-TV, the Circle Star Theater, and for 20th Century Fox in Oakland, CA. He was also the master of ceremonies for the local Junior Miss Pageant in Novato, CA. He wrote many songs, and organized a folk group called the Redwood Travelers who performed in the Bay Area.

As a Substitute Teacher

He has subbed for many teachers in grades 7 through 12, and in most every subject. Although retired, he continues to enjoy the classroom atmosphere and keeping up with the changes in the curricula. His reputation as a dependable substitute with good classroom management skills grew, and he was often booked up to two months ahead. After hearing other substitute teachers wishing for a substitute teacher's guide, he took up the challenge and wrote one. It is packed with practical suggestions that will make any substitute's job much easier.  He is very proud of his creation, and it continues to receive positive reviews from teachers and administrators. It is now being used throughout the US and several provinces of Canada.
